What I've been up to: I've been working with code and design since long before I decided to major in Computer Science at The College of William & Mary. Starting out with HTML as a science fair project, I've since become interested in friendly languages like PHP, Ruby, Python, Java, and many others. I've also created many web applications from scratch and with the help of many web frameworks. Currently I'm interested in the tough parts of CS and user interface design. If you're looking for intelligent, robust work on the web or elsewhere, I'd love to get in touch with you.
At Siemens, I got the chance to work with Marketing and IT to improve their internal sites and develop new applications. Siemens has an impressive backend system to manage sales among their thousands of professional clients, and also a need to make images appeal to an incredibly large audience. Part of my work was spent dealing with user interface design, while other tasks focused on writing new code in Visual Basic, PHP, and Javascript.
Highlander Capital is a successful and methodical investment adviser. Like many companies in the field, Highlander faced the challenge of creating a web presence which embodies the same reliability and consistency as the rest of their work. Highlander's website is engineered to be absolutely secure but easily updatable, and consistent across browsers and their associated firms, including Highlander Capital Group, a broker/dealer.
The Flat Hat is the primary and longest-running newspaper at the College of William and Mary. Creating a new web presence for the paper involved a fast deployment, high capacity demands, and flexibility for the large staff of photo and news editors. I replaced a scratchbuilt system with a documented, tested CMS, and set up controls and services for more than 20 contributors. The website now generates a good deal of revenue for the paper via Adsense, and is the main vector for Flat Hat TV, a new media venture.
The site deftly handles 1,000 - 2,000 visits on publication days, and has served over 350,000 pageviews.
One of my most interesting projects has been the design and deployment of a weblog for Father Lasch, a progressive priest emeritus from Mendham, NJ. The development of the site, using the Textpattern CMS, introduced me to new technology (at one point, I developed a script to automatically link bible references in his text) and UI patterns.
